As reluctant as you might be to say goodbye to strawberry girl makeup and a tomato girl summer, there’s nothing quite like welcoming a wave of fresh new makeup looks into your beauty repertoire—and this fall is bringing the drama big-time. This season, we’re looking forward to ultra-rich colours, edgy eye looks and yes, latte-inspired makeup.
From Sydney Sweeney’s Xtina-inspired glam to Olivia Rodrigo’s vampy new look, this season’s crop of makeup trends will have you trading in your swimwear and shorts for chunky knits and knee-grazing boots, promise!
Read on for some serious makeup inspo, plus the coolest new products to help you get the look.
Olivia Rodrigo’s in her vampire era and we’re certainly not mad about it. The star took to social media to show off her blood red lips and a short mani to match, and it’s giving major fall energy. To get the look, opt for a high-pigment gloss with plenty of shine, like KVD Beauty’s XO Vinyl Lip Cream in the shade “Dahlia”. Rodrigo keeps her lashes pretty low-key here, so be sure to use a mascara lightweight enough to give you that romantic wispy look, like the Clinique High Impact High-Fi Full Volume Mascara, which features a gel formula that adds volume without clumpiness. The narrow tip of the wand makes it easy to separate and define individual lashes, too. Add a double coat of OPI’s Lip Lacquer in “Malaga” to short, square nails followed by a layer of glossy topcoat. And if you really want to capture those grungy teen vibes, be sure to let it chip along the way.
From Beyoncé to Taylor Swift, it’s been the summer of iconic album tours. And with iconic tours comes iconic beauty looks. Case in point: Queen Bey’s glittering eye makeup, which she has rocked during multiple performances this year. We’re particularly fond of this celestial look from the star’s Toronto performance, which was created by celebrity makeup artist Rokael Lizama. To master the diamond dusted look, look for a silvery shadow packed with glitter. For a creamy formula, try the Valentino Dreamdust Glitter Eyeshadow, which creates a multidimensional reflective look with zero fallout. If you’re after an extra hit of iridescence, apply Stila’s duochrome liquid shadow on top of any powder formula as a topper. Draw on a dramatic cat eye (we love NYX Cosmetics’ Vivid Matte Liquid Liner) and you’ll be Renaissance-Ready in no time.
Y2K-inspired styles have been back for a while, but this fall we’re going a little less bubblegum and a little more edgy. Take Sydney Sweeney’s glam, which makeup artist Patrick Ta calls “music video vixon”. For this 2000’s-era look, load up on the liner. To keep things simple, go for an all-in-one pencil, liner and shadow like the Sisley-Paris Phyto-Eye Twist in Deep Black. This fuss-free jumbo pencil glides on skin effortlessly and stays put to avoid the dreaded racoon-eye look (think more pop princess, less indie sleaze). Then, go for a mattifying lip gloss that has a touch of hydration to it to keep things fresh. Finish off with a dusting of Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Pressed Finishing Powder, which will tone down shine and leave skin with a healthy-looking glow.
From blueberry nails to glazed donut skin and everything in between, Hailey Bieber hasn’t missed a beat this year. We would be remiss to have a story on celebrity makeup without mentioning her fall-adjacent look: latte makeup. Spotted on celebs like Lori Harvey, Gigi Hadid and many others, this look is all about warm, flattering hues, all inspired by your fave caffeinated beverage. Start with a lightweight skin tint that melts into skin for a natural base. Fenty Beauty’s Eaze Drop Stick Blur + Smooth Tint Stick Foundation works like a charm, and it comes in a handy stick formula for easy application. For the eyes, look for shadows in rich brown shades of espresso, cappuccino and cinnamon, like the one’s found in Guerlain Ombres G Quad Eyeshadow Palette in Wild Nudes. Slick on Milk Makeup’s Odyssey Hydrating Non-Sticky Lip Oil Gloss in Quest for a coffee-inspired lip that’s flattering to boot.
Have you heard? Matte skin is in. But we’re not talking about the flat, one-dimensional looks of the past, we’re talking soft, velvety skin with a natural finish, à la Selena Gomez. After cleansing and moisturizing the skin (no flakiness here), apply a lightweight mattifying foundation to get even coverage. Sephora’s Best Skin Ever Matte Powder Foundation is a great budget-friendly option and comes in 40 shades. For a touch of dewiness, apply a dot of Nudestix Nudies Matte + Glow Core All Over Face Blush Color in Sunset Gold on the high points of the cheeks and blend. The new formula combines the brand’s best-selling matte blush with a skincare-infused hydrating core. And a cloud look wouldn’t be complete without fluffy brows, so don’t forget to brush hairs into place with Rare Beauty’s latest Harmony Flexible Lifting Gel.
