Inside The World’s Most Remote Cabin (House Tour)
Creating a place for people to reconnect with each other and nature, Patterson Associates built a cabin that sits upon the New Zealand landscape with advantageous coastal views. Located on a working sheep and cattle farm on the Banks Peninsula, Scrubby Bay is extremely remote. The cabin home is architectural in its design and faces straight into the sub-Antarctic weather that comes in from the bay and down the mountains. Moreso, due to the home’s location, there is a wide variety of wildlife, including an array of birds, dolphins and whales. Faced with the decision of what to design and how to design it, the architect was drawn to building a residence that responded to the site. Moreover, seen in the house tour of the cabin is the bay, which tends to be covered in driftwood. This helped influence the architect on choosing the unique materials and timber for the project. Designed to age and get better with time, Scrubby Bay is laid out as two simple gabled barn forms that are slotted together. Specifically arranged for families or large groups renting off Airbnb, the house can accommodate up to 16 people and encourages them to come together and experience the natural landscape. Three main bedrooms have been created for the adults and spread throughout the gabled form of the home. Additionally, seen in the house tour, at each side of the home are two gathering areas, one being an entertainment deck facing the ocean and the other is a pool facing the rear mountains. As the cabin tour progresses, the middle of the home is revealed, where a living space has been placed as a central gathering spot. The home also offers unparalleled views from the rear mountains and out to the ocean making for a picturesque Airbnb stay. Due to the home’s farm location, as well as being out in the open to face the harsh elements of the bay, the house needed to be robust. The cabin also had to feel good for people to walk around in gumboots should they need. Moreover, the home’s materials had to be shipped in via small trucks from Christchurch, the nearest city, and construction of the home was stopped and restarted due to the weather, sheep season and the remote location. Using materials that were found around the farm, the architect built the house out of timber, including driftwood employed throughout the interior design of the home. The centrepiece of the main living space is a stone fireplace – built from rocks found at the nearby remote rock quarry – that separates living, dining and kitchen spaces. The interior design of the home features many bespoke elements including decor, fabrics and lighting. Intrinsically placed upon the landscape as if it is a part of it, Scrubby Bay is more than just a uniquely remote place to stay but a place to connect to the coastal landscape and with each other. 00:00 - Introduction to the Remote Cabin 01:16 - The History of the Landscape 02:13 - An Insight into the Design Inspiration 03:02 - The Layout of the Cabin 03:57 - Approaching the Bay 05:02 - The Respectful Construction Process 05:30 - A Robust Material Palette 06:31 - The Functionalities of the Cabin 07:23 - A Sustainable Approach to the Build For more from The Local Project: For more from The Local Project: Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/thelocalproject/ Website – https://thelocalproject.com.au/ LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-local-project-publication/ Print Publication – https://thelocalproject.com.au/publication/ Hardcover Book – https://thelocalproject.com.au/book/ The Local Project Marketplace – https://thelocalproject.com.au/marketplace/ For more from The Local Production: Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/thelocalproduction_/ Website – https://thelocalproduction.com.au/ LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/company/thelocalproduction/ To subscribe to The Local Project's tri-annual print publication see here – https://thelocalproject.com.au/subscribe/ Photography by Sam Hartnett. Architect Designs Byron Bay’s Most Expensive Home (House Tour)
Nestled on the beach in one of Australia’s most serene coastal enclaves, Border Street is an expensive home and eloquent response to the pristine Byron Bay environment where it resides. Artfully conceived by Workroom, the residence shuts out the rest of the world in its contemplation of place, form and materials. “I like the sense of calm that you feel when you walk into the house; it's not busy, it's not loud, it’s not contrived either – it’s very relaxed,” says John Bornas, architect and creative director at Workroom. Perched on a dune hugging a rainforest that falls straight onto Belongil Beach in Byron Bay, the expensive home taps into Byron Bay’s breezy state of slumber without neglecting a sense of refinement. From the street, the house is concealed by a series of screens. “The idea was to try and create a sense of wonder; you don't really know what’s going on behind that screen,” notes John. Walking through the front gate, there is a substantial walk to the front door, allowing one to really experience the landscape the home is set in, rather than “just simply walking through a front door,” says John. One then enters the main living and dining areas, which are bounded by the pavilions that open up to the dune and the rainforest. As with many expensive homes, designing it was not without challenges. The site itself was clouded by various constraints, although Workroom saw these as opportunities. Due to coastal erosion, the house needed to be demountable, which led to various constraints in terms of dimensions as the demountable parts of the house had to fit on a truck and then be re-built. Being made of a series of parts means views are framed in between each section. “Everywhere that you turn in the house there is always a glimpse of the outside … which allows us to once again use the landscape as an element of the house,” he says. Responding to the natural environment where the house resides, robust and sustainable materials were favoured externally and throughout the interior design. Often hallmarks of an expensive home; porcelain, timber and stone dominate the material palette, complemented by minimal decor. “I think when a building ages gracefully and well, it actually adds another layer to the building,” says John. “The fact that the home sits within a landscape that is so lush and alive, it changes over time as well, so the idea that the building also changes as time goes by is important to us.” Border Street responds to the emerging sensibilities of the locale – it is not just another expensive home – it is laid-back yet sophisticated and does not overpower the landscape but exists peacefully alongside it. “Our studio’s approach focuses on a sense of wonder and awareness through having a rigorous understanding of form, space and material,” notes John. In this way, Workroom taps into a broader theme – Byron Bay’s growing reputation as a beach town that effortlessly encapsulates elevated coastal living. As such, despite its size and awe-inspiring ability, Border Street is an enduring family home that provides a promising benchmark for the Byron Bay locale for many years to come. 00:00 - Introduction to Byron Bay’s Most Expensive Home 01:00 - A Unique Location 01:35 - A Walkthrough of the Home 02:23 - Framing the Surrounding Landscape 03:01 - The Opportunities and Constraints of the Site 04:16 - The Material Palette 05:22 - Workroom's Design Approach For more from The Local Project: Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/thelocalproject/ Website – https://thelocalproject.com.au/ LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-local-project-publication/ Print Publication – https://thelocalproject.com.au/publication/ Hardcover Book – https://thelocalproject.com.au/book/ The Local Project Marketplace – https://thelocalproject.com.au/marketplace/ For more from The Local Production: Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/thelocalproduction_/ Website – https://thelocalproduction.com.au/ LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/company/thelocalproduction/ To subscribe to The Local Project's tri-annual print publication see here – https://thelocalproject.com.au/subscribe/ Photography by Timothy Kaye. Minimalist Couple Living in a Small 400 ft² Apartment with Clever Storage Ideas – FULL TOUR
Tina and Rob downsized to a 400-square-foot apartment so they could afford to get into the housing market. They've been living in this space for 3 years and have become masters at downsizing, organizing, and playing Tetris with their stuff to create a comfortable, functional home that has a minimalist and spacious feel without feeling cluttered. They put a lot of thought and intention into every aspect of their home and came up with some beautiful interior design ideas as well as some clever storage and organization hacks in each space, from the kitchen and living room to the bathroom and bedroom. We've gotten so many great ideas after taking a peek inside their little condo for two! You can follow and find out more about Tina & Rob's Small Space Big Life project here: https://www.youtube.com/@smallspacebiglife https://www.instagram.com/smallspacebiglifevancouver https://www.tiktok.com/@smallspacebiglife Living in a small space isn't easy, and it requires a lot of discipline to keep the space clean and uncluttered. One of the things Tina and Rob do to prevent things from piling up is a one-in, one-out rule. So if they're bringing something new into the apartment, they have to get rid of something to make space for it. But some of the benefits of living small are undeniable, it's more affordable, it's simple, and it can reduce your environmental impact if it means you use less electricity, buy fewer things, have less space to heat and cool, etc. We hope you enjoyed this video! Amazing Off-Grid TINY HOUSE Built While At University
Phoebe and Luke have constructed a spectacular tiny house for themselves. It’s modern, beautifully built and enjoys a wonderfully spacious design. Totally off the grid and parked up on a friends farm, the home is surrounded by captivating rural views and is certainly an enviable place to live. With the explosive cost of housing and affordability across the board at a remarkable low, it’s tough for young people to get ahead in life. Especially if you’ve been to University, most people start their adult life in debt and have to dig themselves out before they can even consider getting onto the housing ladder. This inspiring young couple on the other hand chose to do things a bit differently and constructed their own tiny house on wheels while they were finishing their degrees, giving them a debt free home to move into and a phenomenal start to their independent adult lives. With very little prior building experience, constructing their own tiny house was a huge learning curve for the couple, but the result is impressive and has provided them with construction skills which are bound to be abundantly useful going forward in their lives. This tiny house is paired with a massive solar system and is totally off the grid. An impressive array of solar panels and a great sized battery bank insure the house always has an abundance of power. We hope you enjoy the tour of this tiny home!
